Amtrak has announced some eco-friendly trains. The company received $216.5 million in federal funding to get the train out there. They offer a 90 percent reduction in emissions, as well as require 2/3rds less fuel than the traditional trains. The trains will be quieter and require less maintenance.

The 33 new trains will be departing from Chicago on routes that serve about 2.6 million customers each year.

A statement about the move was released from David Simon, the Director of the Bureau of Transit, Local Roads, Railroads and Harbors at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

“We look forward to the improved efficiency and reliability that the Siemens Charger locomotives bring to intercity passenger rail services across the Midwest.”
