Discovery Communications (of Discovery Channel and Animal Planet) has plans to launch an eco theme park in Costa Rica. The park will be located in the province of Guanacaste and has a tentative opening date of 2020.
The park is estimated to cost somewhere around $1 billion, and it will focus on themes like biodiversity and conservation. Activities for guests will include things like scuba diving and rock climbing. It will also include a water park, restaurants, and Discovery hotels.
Not many other details about the park have been announced at this point, but the Costa Rica president Luis Guillermo Solis says that the park will be on of the company’s “largest investments in the last 10 years.”
The country’s Minister of Environment, Edgar Gutiérrez Espeleta also ensured that conservation would be the main concern.
“The environmental element is a fundamental part of these types of projects. Our country has proudly opted for some time now for a model of development in harmony with the environment, and thanks to this, our biggest wealth is precisely the conservation of our nature.
“The Costa Rican population can be sure that we will not risk our natural resources or the well-being of the communities; they can also be sure that this project will go through the most rigorous environmental controls that will give us certainty of all its implications.”
