The alleged Fort Lauderdale shooter went to the airport with the intention to harm, according to authorities. Esteban Santiago picked up a bag at the baggage claim that contained a gun and then proceeded to fire at other travelers on Friday afternoon. He ended up killing five and wounding six.
Following the attack, there was a significant amount of chaos as people fled the scene, which resulted in 40 other being injured in the rush. Those injuries ranged from bruises to breaks.
Esteban did not resist arrest and was taking in on charges of murder. He had been in Alaska where he worked as a security guard, after being discharged from the Alaska Army National Guard in 2014 for “unsatisfactory performance.”
In November Esteban had visited an FBI office in Anchorage to share that he was hearing voices and being told to watch ISIS videos. They proceeded to do an assessment of his mental health. Esteban’s family says that he was not the same after returning from the war in Iraq, and had lost touch with him in recent months.
