Some people are better plane sleepers than others, but on a long flight it’s certainly something that everyone hopes they’re successful at. Here are some tips for having the best odds possible.

Eat Before You Fly

Your body knows that you don’t generally turn in for the night until you’ve had dinner, so one way to help yourself adjust is to eat before you board the plane. If you fall asleep on an empty stomach you are way more likely to wake up prematurely mid-air.

Cover those Eyes

Light is the opposite of what you need when you’re trying to fall asleep anywhere, so both covering your eyes with a sleep mask and avoiding electronics is going to be key. The light from electronics is notorious for messing with people’s sleep cycles.

Bring a Neck Pillow

For most people it’s not super natural to sleep sitting up and therefore we risk being jolted awake each time our head dips forward. The best way to combat this (besides upgrading to first class) is to wear a neck pillow to keep your head in place.

Dress Comfortably

It goes without saying that being comfortable is helpful to have the best seat but many people choose to fly in their business clothes. If you can’t go too comfy with the outfit at least bring something familiar from home such as a sweater or small blanket to have on your lap.
