There are currently 4,000 islands in Indonesia that do not have names, and the Indonesian government came up with the idea that foreign investors can have the honor.

Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that “they can give [the island] any name they want. as long as they report to us.”

The islands will still belong to the Indonesian government but are available for development, so investors can choose to make them a tourist spot, develop the agriculture there, or do anything else they want.

Some Japanese investors have been given permission to handle Morotai Island and turn it into a vacation spot for elderly Japanese tourists.
