Italy is taking part in something called Barter Week, in an attempt to give people the chance to travel that otherwise might not have the finances to do so. Thousands of bed and breakfasts in the country are offering free room stays in return for some sort of service such as music lessons or olive harvesting.

Barter Week has actually been going on since 2009, and it takes place from November 14 to 20, which is considered a very low booking time of the year. It was initially started by a booking website after it noticed that one bed and breakfast used a barter as payment.

The bed and breakfasts that take part in the week list the services that they are looking for, but people with unique talents to offer are encouraged to barter their own unique ideas for trade as well.

Sometimes the b&b’s are looking for highly skilled people in specific arts, and sometimes they just need some help doing the laundry or some gardening.

When the Barter Week first started there were 1,000 bed and breakfasts taking part, but that number has doubled since then. Some of the b&b’s even accept barter all year round.
