London has rejected a request from Uber to operate in the city. The municipal transport authority of London said that Uber is not a “fit and proper” private car-hire operator.

Uber’s main competition in London is their famous black car taxis, and thanks to Uber’s good prices many people have turned to their services. But part of the reason that the black cab rides cost more is that their drivers have been trained on the geography of the city and truly know their way around.

Now Uber’s September license renewal has been rejected, but Uber plans to appeal that decision. There are currently 40,000 Uber drivers operating in the London area. London’s mayor spoke out about the current decision.

“I want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service. However, all companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect — particularly when it comes to the safety of customers.”
