In the last decade, the popularity of Mexico for a medical tourism location has increased by 96 percent. The country saw over one million visitors in the past year for both cosmetic and more serious surgeries.

In 2006 the country was making $544 million from the medical tourism industry, but by 2016 they were making $4.7 billion.

As for why the popularity has continued to grow, the first obvious answer is that it is simply cheaper to get procedures done in the Mexico than the United States. In some areas, surgeries can be as much as 80 percent cheaper. Mexico also happens to have good medical care, so there’s a two-way draw.

Some of the areas that are currently very popular for medical tourism include Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Puebla, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosi, Sonora, Tamaulipas, and Yucatan.
