The island of Santa Cristina off the northern Lagoon of Venice, Italy has been closed to the public for many years, but now the owners of the island have opened it for public use as an eco resort.
When the island was first purchased it had to be protected from flooding by planting trees, soil, granite, and stone. Then the flora on the island had to be brought back to working order as well.
The Deutsch family spent over half a million dollars to renovate the islands villa which can hold 16 guests. The kitchen at the resort gets its food from the island’s property.
Mr. Deutsch says that:
“We want our guests to connect with this really fragile and beautiful place in the world. But in doing that, we’re also carefully trying to create a healthy balance with the islands ecosystem, be at harmony with the larger lagoon area, and live in a sustainable way by growing our own food on the island and working with our neighbors.”
