Road trips in the U.S. have been predicted to be one of the top trends of the year. Interestingly, the trend doesn’t seem to be related to saving money since many people actually spend more on road trips than they would be taking different travel options.

For some perspective on just how popular road trips have become, the $66.6 billion that people spent on the road in 2015 jumped to $113.7 billion last year. The demographics that are currently enjoying road trips are about 36 percent millennials and 42 percent baby boomers.

A survey done by MMGY Global’s Portrait of the American Traveler found some specifics about the road trippers of the nation. They found that the younger group averages at the age of 36, and that many families are taking road trips because they find it important to be able to stop at destinations along the way.
