The company Waymo has launched large-scale testing of their autonomous taxi service. There is currently an early rider program available in the Phoneix metropolitan area where people can sign up to take part in the testing.
Although being in the testing stages there will still be human drivers in the car for safety reasons.
The company states that “as part of this early trial, there will be a test driver in each vehicle monitoring the rides at all times.”
The car will do the driving but the people will be there to assist. Their goals extend beyond just seeing how people feel about the autonomous driving option but also “learn things like where people want to go in a self-driving car, how they communicate with our vehicles, and what information and controls they want to see inside.”
There are currently 600 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans being used for the trial.
