Southwest Airlines has debuted a new Boeing 737 MAX 8. They are the first airline in North America to use the plane for commercial flights. The first flight in the plane took off from Dallas Love Field and flew to Houston.

The airline hopes to have 14 of the planes in service by the end of the year, with at least 200 orders in the works. Southwest chairman and CEO, Gary Kelly released a statement as the plane took off, in which he explained why it’s such a great achievement.

“Today, we begin a new chapter in Southwest’s history by introducing the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to our customers and employees. The MAX 8 is the future of the Southwest fleet and we look forward to connecting customers to the important moments in their lives through our legendary service delivered with this more fuel-efficient aircraft designed to produce less noise in the communities we serve.”

All 175 seats on the planes offer 32 inches of seat pitch.
