Spirit Airlines is the latest to pull their service out of Cuba. May 31 will mark the last of the airline’s trips from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International to Havana.
Spirit has only offered the service for four months but found that the Cuba demand did not stay as high as it was shortly after the travel restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba were relaxed.
Spirit released a statement about the change.
“The costs of serving Havana continue to outweigh the demand for service. Due to overcapacity and the additional costs associated with flying to Cuba, we don’t find it sustainable to continue this service while maintaining our commitment to pass along ultra-low fares to our customers.”
Other airlines have realized the same. American Airlines cut back their flight services in November, while Silver Airways dropped all of their in March. Jet Blue is switching to smaller planes for their routes as well as reducing the amount of service, and Frontier is reducing their service as well.
