Thanks to specific human conservation efforts the populations of sea turtles seem to be rising again. Six out of seven sea turtle populations are still on the list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, but they seem to be improving.

In the 1970’s there were a variety of conservation effort laws passed by both the U.S. and Mexico have been protecting the turtles. Since those efforts were made the populations have been growing ten to 15 percent each year.

The leatherbacks in the Eastern and Western Pacific are one species of sea turtles that specifically still need help. It’s important that people remain aware of the changes in the sense that protection is possible, without assuming a false sense of security in the increasing numbers.
