The ticketing options are changing at Machu Picchu. Previously people received all day passes to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but now they will be offered either a morning or afternoon pass. All day tickets will still be available but for a different price.
The idea is to cut down on the large crowds that have limited the experience of visitors. Back in the 1980’s visitors were in the 100,000s but by 2014 there were over 1.4 million.
Right now the mornings at Machu Picchu tend to get slammed while the afternoons are less crowded, so they’re hoping to spread that out a bit.
Similar procedures have been enacted at other tourist locations such as Cinque Terra and Angkor Wat which, the latter of which has had to limit tourist numbers at sunrise and sunset.
