The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is thinking about extending its security ban to include flights coming and going from all areas of Europe. An official announcement is expected to come later in the week.

The ban is currently in place for certain airports in the Middle East, and forbids passengers from flying with any electronics that are bigger than smartphones. Some airports responded by offering a service of checking laptops at the gate so that people could use them in the airport, but for companies that charge to check bags the ban could start costing people.

Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for the DHS said that:

“We’ve said we will continue to evaluate the threat environment and make determinations based on that assessment, but we have not made any decisions on expanding the current restrictions against large electronic devices in aircraft cabins from selected airports.”
